Fender   Stratocaster
  1964
Sonic / Daphne / Blue Ice Metallic
  $33950

1964 Fender Stratocaster with rare original mahogany body; a small number of these were made in '63 & '64. The mahogany produces a warmer, darker sound than the standard alder body, and offsets what can be an overly bright, thin sound of single coil pickups, so a real plus for Strat players. The original finish is long gone, at some point later in the '60's the guitar received a factory refinish in Candy Apple Red. There are remnants of the red with gold under coat visible in some of the routing, in addition to some places where the mahogany is clearly visible. The impressed letter codes / abbreviations you'd expect to see on an instrument sent back to Fender for repair or refinishing in those days, on the face of the body and sometimes the neck, are correct. Another refinish was obviously done later, so those markings are not as crisp as they'd otherwise be. The current blue finish looks great, under coat and all, done very well by someone who got it very right. It's somewhere between Sonic Blue, Daphne Blue, and Blue Ice Metallic. Other than the finish the guitar is fully original other than a perfectly cut newer nut, with a gorgeous Brazilian rosewood fingerboard, "clay" dots, single line Klusons, green 'guard, transition logo, and original case. Frets are excellent and the guitar sets up well and plays great. .
